Stormwater is classed as all of the water that flows down our gutters, downpipes, driveways and streets and into the main council drain. This water is then released into our lakes,Dams, harbours and oceans. People may often confuse stormwater systems with sewage systems. Our sewage pipes carry all of the water from our sinks, toilets and showers into the main sewage system where this water is then filtered and treated. Stormwater and sewage drainage systems are designed to keep our health and environment safe and contaminate free by preventing sewage or stormwater backing up into and around our properties.
Do you have a blocked stormwater drain?
You will usually notice a problem with your stormwater drains during heavy rains and storms. Your stormwater systems should be able to handle any amount of increased water, but if there is a blockage or damage somewhere in the pipes then you will soon know about it.
Some common signs that you have a blocked stormwater drain;
- Water pooling around your property
- Surface grates are not clearing or becoming flooded in heavy rain
- Water is coming out the gully at the bottom of your downpipes, rather than being drained
- Unusual sounds, like rushing water or gurgling, coming from your drains
What causes stormwater drains to become blocked?
There are varying factors that may cause your stormwater drains to become blocked the most common being;
Tree roots
Tree roots cause up to 95% of blockages and damage to stormwater pipes. Tree roots thrive in the moist conditions of the earth and are drawn towards the water and nutrients flowing through our pipes. Even the most miniscule, hair-like, root can infiltrate pipework and soon grow into a large mass as it mixes with other leaves and debris flowing through the drainage system.
Lack of maintenance
It is important to keep your gutters and grates free of leaves and debris. If you have a gutter full of leaves these will be pushed into your drains and grates during heavy rain – quickly causing a blockage.
Incorrect Installation
If your stormwater pipes have been installed by someone other than a professional, fully qualified plumber there is a major risk that they may be installed incorrectly, often with short cuts taken to try and save money. Tree roots will often penetrate through poorly installed joints or misaligned pipes and will continue to penetrate the pipework no matter how many times they are unblocked. The best option with incorrectly installed pipework is to have it replaced by a professional plumber.
Foreign Matter
If foreign objects find their way into your drains or grates they may end up getting stuck and causing a blockage of your stormwater drainage system.
Broken Pipes
If your stormwater pipes have been damaged or if they have collapsed your drainage system will quickly back up as the water is unable to flow as intended.
